Parent/Caregiver Guide for
English Language Development
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
Type: In-House Design Project
Role: Primary Designer
Tools Used: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
Overview:
This booklet was created for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) as an informative guide for parents and caregivers of English Learners. The content outlined what it means to be an English Learner (EL), how to enroll in the EL program, details of the screening and assessment process, available services, and how students transition out of the program. The guide also included suggested activities parents can do at home to support their child’s language development. Originally provided as a text-heavy Word document, my role was to transform it into a visually engaging, easy-to-understand booklet.
Objective:
The goal of this project was to clearly communicate essential information about the English Language Development program to parents—many of whom may be unfamiliar with the process or terminology. My task was to ensure the booklet was accessible, visually appealing, and aligned with NCDPI’s updated brand identity, while also improving the clarity and usability of the content through thoughtful design.
Approach:
To accomplish this, I incorporated warm, inclusive imagery of children and families, redesigned outdated infographics and tables for better readability, and introduced a variety of icons to guide readers through sections and highlight key information. While working within the newly established NCDPI brand guidelines, I also focused on balancing the heavy amount of text with clean layout structures, strategic white space, and visual elements to support comprehension. The booklet needed to be welcoming and supportive, without overwhelming the reader.
Outcome:
The final product is a professional, on-brand booklet that makes complex information more approachable for parents and caregivers. It combines functional design with emotional appeal, using visuals, icons, and reorganized content to create a clear and supportive resource. As one of my first major projects with NCDPI, this piece allowed me to apply a wide range of design skills—from layout and brand consistency to infographic development—while making a meaningful contribution to family engagement in education.
