Avant Garde Gothic
Type Specimen Booklet

Methodist University

Type: Personal Class Project
Role: Designer
Tools Used: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

Overview:
Created during my Junior/Senior year in college, this personal class project challenged students to explore and showcase a typeface of their choice. I selected Avant Garde Gothic for its minimalist yet expressive character. With no required content or layout structure, the project encouraged creative freedom and experimentation.

Objective:
To design a short booklet that explores the history, usage, and visual impact of Avant Garde Gothic. The goal was to both inform and inspire through typography, layout, and artistic expression.

Approach:
I researched the origins and design principles behind Avant Garde Gothic, using that knowledge to build a compelling visual narrative. The booklet features a mix of vibrant colors and paint textures set against solid black, allowing the clean lines of the typeface to stand out. It combines historical context with expressive design to celebrate the simplicity and sophistication of this iconic font.

Outcome:
A visually striking, eight-page type specimen booklet that highlights the font’s form and function. The piece plays with contrast and color while maintaining a strong typographic structure, effectively showcasing the elegance and versatility of Avant Garde Gothic. This project remains one of my favorites for its balance of design freedom and typographic exploration.
